Hoa Vinh
Dr Hoa Vinh is the Assistant Chairman, Orthopedic Pathology Department, Armed Forces Institute of Pathology, Washington, DC.
Born and raised in Viet Nam, she completed her medical undergraduate education at the University of Saigon, School of Medicine, graduating in 1973. After initial postgraduate training in Saigon, she emigrated to the United States of America, and completed a residency in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology at the University Health Center of Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. She completed the American Board of Anatomic and Clinical Pathology in 1979.
Dr Vinh joined the US Air Force as a volunteer to join the staff of the Orthopedic Department at the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology, rising to the rank of Major during the years 1980 to 1984. She accepted her present appointment as Assistant Chairman of the Orthopedic Pathology Department in 1984. Dr Vinh has graced this position with significant contributions to medical education, research, and in the field of Orthopedic Pathology.Dr Vinh's special interests are in tissue reaction to prosthetic implant failure, infectious diseases of bone and joint, arthritides, and special laboratory techniques including transmission and scanning electron microscopy and immunohistochemical study in the evaluation of bone and joint affections/tumors.
She has promoted a technique for the identification of polymeric debris in tissue sections by the Oil-red-O Staining Method, which was first discovered by Dr. Frank B. Johnson (AFIP) in early 1980. This technique now is used world-wide for the evaluation of the effects of polymeric debris on tissue about failed implants.
Dr Vinh has written and lectured widely in the field of musculosketal pathology, particularly in her fields of special interest. She has been particularly active in orthopaedic education and is a mainstay of the bi-annual AFIP/ARP Orthopedic Pathology and Basic Science Course [1992-99] and the Annual COA Basic Science Course [1994-99].
She has co-authored a book chapter with Dr Don Sweet: Pathology of Infectious Disease. Bone and Joint Infections. 1997 Ed Connor & Chandler, Appleton and Lange. She has contributed as author or co-author, several articles and poster presentations per year since the beginning of her career, a significant contribution given the remarkable workload of consultations handled by the Orthopedic Pathology Department.
Dr Vinh will be lecturing during the COA Basic Science Course on Infectious Diseases, the Arthritides, and will be sharing responsibility for the laboratory portion of the course with Dr Kris Shekitka.
