Emil Schemitsch
Dr. Emil Schemitsch has distinguished himself in the fields of traumatology and total joint arthroplasty.
From medical school, graduating in 1984, and orthopaedic residency finishing in June 1991, both at the University of Toronto, Dr Schemitsch undertook fellowship training first in Seattle with Drs Swiontkowski and Tencer [Jan 92 to Jun 93] with special interest in orthopaedic traumatology, blood flow, and biomechanics. Subsequently, he trained in adult joint reconstruction with Dr Clement B. Sledge finishing in 1993.
He is an Associate Professor in the Department of Surgery at the University of Toronto. He practices at St. Michael's Hospital and is a consultant at Sunnybrook Health Science Centre and St. John's Rehabilitation Hospital, in Toronto.
Dr Schemitsch has been remarkably active in his fields of academic interest, producing a wealth of published material in the first several years of his practice. He has won awards throughout his career, as a resident for the quality of his research, and for teaching excellence. He won the CORE/ACORE Award in 1993, the McLaughlin Fellowship in 1993, the North American Traveling Fellowship in 1995, and the ABC Traveling Fellowship in 1999. He continues to receive awards each year for the quality of his research presentations.
Dr Schemitsch's tasks during the Basic Science Course include overseeing the Trauma day, and presenting the Principles of Treatment of Fractures as well as reviewing the Complications of Fracture Care.
